CADILLAC RANCH
Well, there she sits buddy justa gleaming in the sun
There to greet a working man when his day is done
I'm gonna pack my pa and I'm gonna pack my aunt
I'm gonna take them down to the Cadillac Ranch
Eldorado fins, whitewalls and skirts
Rides just like a little bit of heaven here on earth
Well buddy when I die throw my body in the back
And drive me to the junkyard in my Cadillac
Cadillac, Cadillac
Long and dark, shiny and black
Open up your engines let 'em roar
Tearing up the highway like a big old dinosaur
James Dean in that Mercury '49
Junior Johnson runnin' thru the woods of Caroline
Even Burt Reynolds in that black Trans-Am
All gonna meet down at the Cadillac Ranch
Cadillac, Cadillac
Long and dark, shiny and black
Open up them engines let 'em roar
Tearing up the highway like a big old dinosaur
Hey, little girlie in the blue jeans so tight
Drivin' alone through the Wisconsin night
You're my last love baby you're my last chance
Don't let 'em take me to the Cadillac Ranch
Cadillac, Cadillac
Long and dark, shiny and black
Pulled up to my house today
Came and took my little girl away
FAMILY SONG (a.k.a. "California" or "California, You're a Woman")
Well you know when you're young there's such a distance between you and your family
You just can't see things from the same point of view
Papa wants a lawyer and mama she wants an author
And all you want is for them to want you
Well, I saw lot of bad signs and we had some real bad times back on the east coast.
And I guess you could say it took California to bring us close
There was a lot of hard livin' and some stone cold women on the east coast
And I saw my papa turn away when I need him most
And California, she's an angel oh so heavenly dressed
And the Pacific she's a woman The Lord must have loved her best
I've got a California rainbow come give them thunder clouds a rest
Oh and the mountain is my friend now, she put me to her test
Well you know every father has dreams and schemes fo his own kid
And dreaming it ain't been declaired no capital crime
But I just hope when I grow up to have my own kids
That I'll love them all I can and let 'em make their own minds
Now you know how a mother can hold the son through understanding
And my father he once held me close by crying
Whoa, and my mama's love it don't ever leave me standing
And papa's love it just leaves me smiling
Whoa, and my mama she's a rainbow,
gotta see hen on Sunday when she's dressed
Whoa, and my papa he's a good man, he gives me and mama his best
Whoa, my mama she's a rainbow, come to give them thunder clouds a rest
And my family is my friend now California put us through her test
CAMILLA HORNE
Camilla Horne, she was born a long, long time ago.
She Came From Germany to the U.S.A.
and was acclaimed as the next Garbo.
They came to her on their knees, to bless them, caress them and tell them what they need.
But oh, oh, she did not know.
and so she took her place at the bar.
Just another fallen star.
CANDY'S ROOM
In Candy's room there are pictures of her heroes on the wall
but to get to Candy's room you gotta walk the darkness of Candy's hall
Strangers from the city call my baby's number and they bring her toys
When I come knocking she smiles pretty she knows I wanna be Candy's boy
There's a sadness hidden in that pretty face
A sadness all her own from which no man can keep Candy safe
We kiss, my heart's rushes to my brain
The blood rushes in my veins fire rushes towards the sky
We go driving driving deep into the night
I go driving deep into the light in Candy's eyes
She says baby if you wanna be wild
you got a lot to learn, close your eyes
Let them melt, let them fire, let them burn
Cause in the darkness there'll be hidden worlds that shine
When I hold Candy close she makes these hidden worlds mine
She has fancy clothes and diamond rings
She has men who give her anything she wants but they don't see
That what she wants is me,
oh and I want her so
I'll never let her go, no no no
She knows that I'd give
all that I got to give
All that I want all that I live
to make Candy mine
Tonight
CAR WASH
Well my name is Catherine LeFevre
I work at the Astrowash on Sunset and Vine
I drop my kids at school in the morning
And I pick them up at Mary's just 'fore suppertime
Well I work down at the car wash
For a dollar and a dime
And mister, I hate my boss
It's at the car wash I'm doing my time
Pick up my water bottle and my towel, sir
And I take 'em one by one
From Mercedes to VW's
I do 'em all and I don't favor none
Well I work down at the car wash
For a dollar and a dime
And mister, I hate my boss
It's at the car wash I'm doing my time
Well someday I'll sing in a night club
I'll get a million-dollar break
A handsome man will come here with a contract in his hand
And say "Catherine, this has all been some mistake"
Well I work down at the car wash
For a dollar and a dime
And mister, I hate my boss
It's at the car wash I'm doing my time
CAUTIOUS MAN
Bill Horton was a cautious man of the road
He walked lookin' over his shoulder and remained faithful to its code
When something caught his eye he'd measure his need
And then very carefully he'd proceed
Billy met a young girl in the early days of May
It was there in her arms he let his cautiousness slip away
In their lovers twilight as the evening sky grew dim
He'd lay back in her arms and laugh at what had happened to him
On his right hand Billy tattooed the word love and on his left hand was the word fear
And in which hand he held his fate was never clear
Come Indian summer he took his young lover for his bride
And with his own hands built a great house down by the riverside
Now Billy was an honest man he wanted to do what was right
He worked hard to fill their lives with happy days and loving nights
Alone on his knees in the darkness for steadiness he'd pray
For he knew in a restless heart the seed of betrayal lay
One night Billy awoke from a terrible dream callin' his wife's name
She lay breathing beside him in a peaceful sleep, a thousand miles away
He got dressed in the moonlight and down to the highway he strode
When he got there he didn't find nothing but road
Billy felt a coldness rise up inside him that he couldn't name
Just as the words tattooed 'cross his knuckles he knew would always remain
At their bedside he brushed the hair from his wife's face as the moon shone on her skin so white
Filling their room with the beauty of God's fallen light
CHICKEN LIPS AND LIZARD HIPS
Oh, when I was a little kid I never liked to eat,
Mama'd put things on my plate, I'd dump them on her feet,
But then one day she made this soup, I ate it all in bed,
I asked her what she put in it, and this is want she said.
Chicken lips and lizard hips and alligator eyes
Monkey legs and buzzard eggs and salamander thighs
Rabbit ears and camel rears and tasty toe-nail pies
Stir them all together, it's Mama's Soup Surprise.
I went into the bathroom and stood beside the sink,
I said I'm feeling slightly ill, I think I'd like a drink,
Mama said "I've just the thing, I'll get it in a wink,
It's full of lots of protein, and vitamins I think."
Chicken lips and lizard hips and alligator eyes
Monkey legs and buzzard eggs and salamander thighs
Rabbit ears and camel rears and tasty toe-nail pies
Stir them all together, it's Mama's Soup Surprise.
CHILD BRIDE
Well sometimes I dream of getting out of here
Heading down towards them old tracks
I swore I'd come and get there
But I know I ain't never going back
There's nights I can't sleep
No matter how hard I try
So from my window I watch the moonlight
Fall on the far hillside
I imagine I put on my jacket
Go down to this little roadside bar
Pick a stranger and spin around the dance floor
To a Mexican guitar
CHIMES OF FREEDOM
Well, far between sundown's finish and midnight's broken toll
We ducked inside the doorway, thunder crashin'
As majestic bells of bolts struck shadows in the sun;
Sayin', it may be the chimes of freedom flashin'
Flashin' for the warriors whose strength is not to fight;
Flashin' for the refugees on their unarmed road of flight.
And for each and every underdog soldier in the night
We gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashin'
Well, in the city's melted furnace unexpectedly we watched
With faces hidden here while the walls were tightenin'
As the echo of the wedding bells before the blowing rain;
Dissolved into the wild bales of lightnin'
Yeah, tollin' for the rebel, yeah, tollin' for the raked
Tollin' for the luckless, the abandoned and forsaked.
Yeah, tollin' for the outcasts burnin' constantly at stakes
And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashin'
And then through a cloud-like curtain in a far off corner flashed
There's a hypnotic, splattered mist was slowly liftin'
Well, electric light still struck like arrows
Fired but for the ones condemned to drift or else be kept from driftin'
Well, tollin' for the searching ones on this speechless, secret trail
For the lonesome haunted lovers with too personal a tale.
And for each young heart for each channeled soul misplaced inside a jail
Yeah, we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashin'
Well, starry eyed and laughin' I recall when we were caught,
Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended
As we listened one last time, and we watched with one last look
Spellbound and swallowed "Has the tollin' ended?"
Yeah, tollin' for the achin' ones whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless, confused, accused, misused strung out ones at worst.
And for every hung out person in the whole wide universe
We gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashin'
CINDY
I pick you up with flowers
When you get off from work
It's like you don't even care
It's like I'm some kind of jerk
I take you out on a date
And then you won't even kiss me
Boy when I ain't around
I'll bet you don't even miss me
I don't know why
I love you like I do
I try and try
You treat me like a fool
It makes me want to cry
It makes me feel so blue
But I just do, baby, I just do
I call you up
Just to pass the time
Soon as you hear my voice
You disconnect the line
And when I call you back
Your mother says you ain't home
Cindy I know that's you on the other end of this phone
Oh in this world
There ain't another like you
My little candy girl
So hard-hearted and cruel
I think that's what
Keeps me coming back
I'm a fool for you Cindy and I like it like that
I came to get you last night
Cindy, at quarter to six
Your daddy came to the door
He said Cindy got sick
She got sent home from work
With a note from the nurse
And my very presenceWould make your condition worse
But it ain't your health
'Cause well you sure look fine
Little girl it's something else
That's on my mind
Well you can give it to me
'Cause if it's good enough for you
It's good enough for me
I don't know why
I love you like I do
You make me cry
And feel like such a fool
I guess I like it
When you hurt me this way
You dish it out and I just put it away
CIRCUS SONG
The machinist climbs his ferris wheel like a brave
And the fire eater's lyin' in a pool of sweat victim of the heatwave
Behind the tent the leatherboy tightens his legs
On the sword swallower's blade
Circus town's on the shortwave
Well now (and) the runway lies ahead like a great false dawn
Oh fat lady, Missy Bimbo, sits in her chair and yawns
And the man-beast lies in his cage sniffin' popcorn
The midget licks his fingers and suffers Missy Bimbo's scorn
The circus town's been born
Oh and a (the) press-roll drummer go, ballerina to-and-fro
Cart-wheelin' up on (across) the tightrope
(And) with a cannon blast, lightning flash, moving fast through
The tent Mars bent, he's gonna miss his fall
Oh God save the human cannonball
And the flying Zambini's watch Marguerita do her neck twist
(And) the ringmaster gets the crowd to count along
Ninety-five, ninety-six,....ninety-seven
And behind the tent half bent money spent
With his wet face fallin' (make-up drippin') on the ground
With a half-smile half-frown goin' down
Oh Jesus sent some sweet women to save all the clowns
And circus boy dances like a monkey on barbed wire
And the barker romances with a junkie, she's got a flat tyre
And the elephants dance real funky, and the band plays like a jungle fire
Circus town's on the live wire
Samson lifts the midget up above the liars
Hear the liars, they're outside crying
Hear the liars, they're inside sighing
Hear the liars, listenin' to the barker
Hear the liars, watching the centre ring
Oh hear the liars, up on the trapeze
Oh hear the liars, feel their fire
Oh hear the liars, feel their fire
Oh hear the liars, they're all scared of dying
Well anybody wants to try the big top
All aboard, Nebraska's our next stop
CLUB SOUL CITY
Pack up your bags
Don't look back
There's a little place
Out 'cross the the railroad tracks
If you're broken-hearted
And you don't know what to do
But they got a place down there that's just for you
Club Soul, Club Soul City, yeah yeah yeah
Club Soul, Club Soul City, oh yeah
There's a waitress at the back bar
Goes with the the guy that runs the place
She's got hair like a weeping willow
And tears running down her face
She's seen a lot of guys like you coming around
Looking for something that they've lost
Or trying to lose something that they've found
Down at
Club Soul, Club Soul City, yeah yeah yeah
Club Soul, Club Soul City, oh yeah
So if you're down on your spirit
And there ain't no-one who cares
If you're lost and you're lonely
You won't be lonely down there
You can't miss it, it's just up the highway
On the front door there's a sign that says
Restricted to the losing kind
Club Soul, Club Soul City, yeah yeah yeah
Club Soul, Club Soul City, oh yeah
Club Soul, Club Soul City, yeah yeah yeah
Club Soul, Club Soul City, oh yeah
CODE OF SILENCE
There's a code of silence,
that we don't dare speak
There's a wall between us
So high and so deep
We keep pretending that there's nothing wrong
And there's a code of silence that can't go wrong
Cause the truth's so elusive
So elusive you see
That it ain't enough baby,
To bridge the distance between you and me
Well, there's a list of grievance a hundred miles long
There's a code of silence and it can't go on
Well you walk with your eyes open,
but your lips they remain sealed
All the promises we made are broken
fearing the truth and feeling the fear
Now, I need to know now darlin', need to know what's going on
So come on, come on, come on, come on
come on, come on, come on
Well you walk with your eyes open, but your lips they remained sealed
All the promises we made are broken
With the truth fearing revealed
Now, I need to know now darlin', need to know what's going on
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on
There's a code of silence, that we don't dare speak
There's a wall between us, so high and so deep
We keep pretending that there's nothing wrong
There's a code of silence, and it can't go on
And it can't go on, and it can't go on
And it can't go on, and it can't go on
SANTA ANA
From the tin rooftop the little boy did watch
The procession down through town
Through the museum where Daniel whupped the Devil
With them boys from the underground
Where the Giants of Science fight for tight control
Over the wildlands of New Mexico
Sam Houston's ghost's in Texas fighting for his soul
And the townsfolk rest uneasy beneath the guns of Kid Cole
And the kid says: "Hey, where's Santa Ana
He who could romance the dumb into talking
Take a chance with me tonight, my contessa,
If it don't work out I ain't lame, I can walk"
Now some folks think cancer's taken to the streets of this town
But Sandy eats her candy and then lays her money down
Them cats are in from the canyons to strut their stuff in town
But there's only secret sinners here
Lord, there's only secret thieves
Only a fool would try to save
What the desert chose to leave
And hey there se¤orita,
With your playboys in their Spanish bandanas
French cream won't soften those boots, baby
French kisses will not break your heart
Oh painted night set free with light
Glows outside the Rainbow Saloon
Matching braces with a Spanish lady
'Neath a graduation moon
No more colleges, no more coronations
Some punk's idea of a teenage nation
Has forced Santa Ana to change his station
From soldier to cartoon
And the Giants of Science spend their days and nights
Not with wives, not with lovers, but searchin' for the lights
They spotted in the desert on their helicopter flights
Just to be lost in the dust and the night
Hey my Contessa, in your juke joint rags you always bring candy for the kids
Come waltz with me tonight se¤orita
'Cause only fools are alone on a night like this
COUNTY FAIR
Every year when summer comes around
They stretch a banner 'cross the main street in town
You can feel somethin' happenin' in the air
Well, from Carol's house up on Telegraph Hill
You can see the lights goin' up out in the soldiers' field
Gettin' ready for the county fair
County fair, county fair
Everybody in town will be there
So come on, hey, we're goin' down there
Well, little girl with the long blond hair
Come win your daddy one of them stuffed bears
Baby, down at the county fair
Now you'll be hangin' tight when we hit the top
And that roller coaster's ready to drop
You'll be braggin' that you wasn't even scared
Well, baby, you know I just love the sound
Of the pipe organ on the merry-go-round
Baby, down at the county fair
County fair, county fair
Everybody in town will be there
So come on, hey, we're goin' down there
Well, little girl with the long blond hair
Come win your daddy one of them stuffed bears
Baby, down at the county fair
Now at the north end of the field, well, they set up a stand
And they got a little rock & roll band
And people dancin', yeah, out in the open air
Well, it's James Young & The Immortal Ones
Just two guitars, baby, bass and drums
Rockin' out at the county fair
County fair, county fair
Everybody in town will be there
So come on, hey, we're goin' down there
Well, little girl with the long blond hair
Come win your daddy one of them stuffed bears
Baby, down at the county fair
Now it's gettin' late but 'fore we head back to town
We let the fortune wheel spin 'round
Oh mister, tell me what's waitin' out there
On my way out I steal a kiss in the dark
I hope I can remember where our car's parked
Baby, at the county fair
Now off down the highway there's a last stream of cars
As we sit awhile in my front yard
With the radio playin' somethin' low
I pull Carol close to my heart
And I lean back and stare up at the stars
Oh I wish I never had to let this moment go
COUNTIN' ON A MIRACLE
It's a fairytale so tragic
There's no prince to break the spell
I don't believe in the magic
But for you I will, for you I will
If I'm a fool, I'll be a fool
Darlin' for you
I'm countin' on a miracle
Baby I'm countin' on a miracle
Darlin' I'm countin' on miracle
To come through
There ain't no storybook story
There's no never-ending song
Our happily ever after Darlin'
Forever come and gone
I'm movin' on
If I'm gonna believe
I'll put my faith
Darlin' in you
I'm countin' on a miracle
Baby I'm countin' on a miracle
Darlin' I'm countin' on miracle
To come through
Sleeping beauty awakes from her dream
With her lover's kiss on her lips
Your kiss was taken from me
Now all I have is this...
Your kiss, your kiss, your touch, your touch
Your heart, your heart, your strength, your strength
Your hope, your hope, your faith, your faith
Your face, your face, your love, your love
Your dream, your dream, your life, your life
I'm runnin' through the forest
With the wolf at my heels
My king is lost at midnight
When the tower bells peal
We've got no fairytale ending
In God's hands our fate is complete
Your heaven's here in my heart
Our love's this dust beneath my feet
Just this dust beneath my feet
If I'm gonna live
I'll lift my life
Darlin' to you
I'm countin' on a miracle
Baby I'm countin' on a miracle
Darlin' I'm countin' on miracle
To come through
SEASIDE BAR SONG
Well Billy bought a Chevy '40 coupe deluxe
Chrome wheels, stick shift, give her gas, pop the clutch
Girls on the corner like a diamond they shine
Someday Billy I'm gonna make 'em all mine
Hey girl, you wanna ride in Daddy's Cadillac?
'Cause I love the way your long hair falls down your back
Bo Diddley, Bo Diddley's at the Seaside Bar
We'll run barefoot in the sand, listen to his guitar
You say your mama's gonna meet you when the morning comes
And your papa's gonna beat you 'cause he knows you're out on the run
I'm gonna live a life of love and tonight you're the one
The highway is alive tonight so baby do not be frightened
There's something about a pretty girl on a sweet summer night
That gets this boy excited
The radio man finally understands and plays you something you can move to
You lay back, cut loose your drive power
Your girl leans over and says, "Daddy, can you turn that radio up any louder?"
The juke joint's hummin', everybody came down
Little Willie and his Soul Brooms laying all this stuff now
Well don't let that daylight steal your soul
Get in your wheels and roll, roll, roll, roll, roll, roll, roll
Oh that's all right now
Oh go on, go on, go on
Oh mama's gonna meet you when the morning comes
And your daddy's gonna beat you 'cause he knows you're out on the run
But I don't care, I wanna live a life of love while the night's still young
COVER ME
The times are tough now, just getting tougher
This old world is rough, it's just getting rougher
Cover me, come on baby, cover me
Well I'm looking for a lover who will come on in and cover me
Promise me baby you won't let them find us
Hold me in your arms, let's let our love blind us
Cover me, shut the door and cover me
Well I'm looking for a lover who will come on in and cover me
Outside's the rain, the driving snow
I can hear the wild wind blowing
Turn out the light, bolt the door
I ain't going out there no more
This whole world is out there just trying to score
I've seen enough I don't want to see any more,
Cover me, come on and cover me
I'm looking for a lover who will come on in and cover me
Looking for a lover who will come on in and cover me
COWBOYS OF THE SEA
They ride beneath the waves at 20,000 leagues
On stallions stitched to seaweed strands
So smiling, so smiling
They herd the fishes of the deep
They ride for you and me
They ranch the rich and the sunken soil
At the bottom of the sea
In the dead of night, alive in sleep
I hear them calling me
Them deep sea desperadoes
Them midnight maelstrom freaks
The cowboy of the sea
So on wings of sleep I pierce the deep
And ride like a hurricane
At midnight still I paid my bill
And turned my back on the land
With the help of Old Paint, that seaweed nag
It's just Jesse James and me
We ride the depths and rob the banks
At the bottom of the sea
With a seaman's grip on navigation
And some fired, hired hands
We set forth to confront the nation
And lend a cowboy's hand
We do the Dolphins' Dance duet
My mermaid babe and me
Then I ride off into the blue sunset
At the bottom of the sea
And with the seaman's grip on submarining
And some aqualung outlaws
Our guns are made of solid dreamin'
And bullets from a broken cause
And with hand held high to touch the sky
A good Texas Ranger I'll be
But sometimes I feel like a lone stranger
'Midst the cowboys of the sea
Oh and men above he cannot make love
He's got to rape his mother the sea
And because of his greed
We're a vanishing breed
We cowboys of the sea
CROSS MY HEART
First time I crossed my heart
I was beggin' baby, please
At your bedside, down on my knees
When I crossed my heart
When I crossed my heart
I crossed my heart, pretty baby over you
Second time I crossed my heart
Rain came in from the south
I was lyin' there with something sweet and salty in my mouth
When I crossed my heart
When I crossed my heart
When I crossed my heart, pretty darlin' over you
Well, you may think the world's black and white
And you're dirty or you're clean
You better watch out you don't slip
Through them spaces in between
Where the night gets sticky
And the sky gets black
I grabbed you, baby, and you grabbed me back
And we crossed our hearts
We crossed our hearts
Yeah, I crossed my heart...
Little boys, little girls
They know their wrongs from their rights
Once you cross your heart
You ain't ever supposed to lie
Well, life ain't nothin'
But a cold hard ride
I ain't leavin' 'til I'm satisfied
I cross my heart
Yeah, I cross my heart
Well, I cross my heart, pretty darlin' over you
CRUSH ON YOU
My feets were flyin' down the street just the other night
When a Hong Kong special pulled up at the light
What was inside, man, was just c'est magnifique
I wanted to hold the bumper and let her drag me down the street
Ooh, ooh, I gotta crush on you
Ooh, ooh, I gotta crush on you
Ooh, ooh, I gotta crush on you tonight
Sometimes I spot a little stranger standing 'cross the room
My brain takes a vacation just to give my heart more room
For one kiss, darling I swear everything I would give
Cause you're a walking, talking reason to live
Ooh, ooh, I gotta crush on you
Ooh, ooh, I gotta crush on you
Ooh, ooh, I gotta crush on you tonight
Well now she might be the talk of high society
She's probably got a lousy personality
She might be a heiress to Rockefeller
She might be a waitress or a bank teller
She makes the Venus de Milo look like she's got no style
She make Sheena of the Jungle look meek and mild
I need a quick shot, Doc, knock me off my feet
Cause I'll be minding my own business walking down the street... watchout!
Ooh, ooh, I gotta crush on you
Ooh, ooh, I gotta crush on you
Ooh, ooh, I gotta crush on you tonight
CYNTHIA
Cynthia, when you come walkin' by you're an inspiring sight
Cynthia, you don't smile or say hi but baby that's alright
'Cause I don't need to hold you or taste your kiss
I just like knowin', Cynthia, you exist
in a world like this
Cynthia, when you pass it seems like this whole town drops
Cynthia, or maybe it's just me, baby, and these fools stuck here punchin' this clock
Well you give us a reason to stop just for a while
Stop, stand and salute your style
Well now you ain't the finest thing I'll never have
And when you go the hurt you leave, baby, it ain't so bad
There ain't a man in this whole town who'd say you ain't fine
You hear them guys talkin', tell me baby do you mind
Well you make us happy, honey, when we feel sad
To see something so good in a world gone bad
There's still Cynthia
Cynthia, no one knows your number, no one knows where you live
Cynthia, I wonder do you understand this strange thing you give
Well baby is it your style, the mystery in your smile
Or just how cool you walk in a world gone wild
Tell me if you will, Cynthia
Well I gotta be pretty na‹ve to believe in you
I know you ain't ever gonna be my dream come true
That's alright, I got other dreams as good as you, Cynthia
Yeah now baby, now this ain't no come-on
Just walk on, Cynthia, walk on
You make me holler, yeah, yeah, alright
I said yeah, yeah, alright
Well she's a yeah, yeah, alright
I said yeah, yeah, alright
