WAGES OF SIN
When we fight and I wanna talk it out
You won't say nothing, nothing at all
You just sit there, you won't open that pretty mouth
I think you like keeping my back up against the wall
Wages of sin, you keep me paying
Wages of sin for wrongs that I've done
Wages of sin, you keep me paying
Wages of sin, one by one

I walk in the apartment, there's clothes thrown all over the place
You're crouched in the corner with makeup running down your face
I don't wanna believe what my heart keeps saying
You keep me on the line so you can keep me paying
Wages of sin, we keep paying
Wages of sin for the wrongs that we've done
Wages of sin, we keep paying
Wages of sin, that's how we have our fun

I remember when I was a little boy out where the cottonwoods grow tall
Trying to make it home through the forest before the darkness falls
Baby all the sounds I heard, even if they weren't real
I was running down that broken path with the devil snapping at my heels
I tried so hard, so hard in every way
Swore someday I'd grow up, just throw it all away
Cried all the tears, baby, that I could cry
Stomached all my fears 'til they came rushin' up inside
darlin' I'm losin' and it's a mean game
Still I play on just the same
Wages of sin, I keep paying
Wages of sin for some wrong that I've done
Wages of sin, well I keep paying
Wages of sin, one by one

WAITING ON THE END OF THE WORLD
For one deadly love like a disease
I came to you crawlin' on my knees
Your eyes filled with rain
I can feel poison runnin' through my veins

I'm waitin'
I'm waitin'
I'm waitin'
Waitin' on the end of the world

For one deadly kiss what would we give
Your skin tremblin' neath my fingertips
All I know is someday
For love, baby, everybody pays

I'm waitin'

We hide from the truth in our hearts
Like one look and everythin' falls apart
Here in your arms, soft decay
I can feel myself wastin' away

Will you meet me in the hall
Where light scatters and darkness falls
Here in this feast of friends
To break and begin again

I'm waitin'

WAITIN' ON A SUNNY DAY

It's rainin' but there ain't a cloud in the sky
Must of been a tear from your eye
Everything'll be okay
Funny, thought I felt a sweet summer breeze
Must of been you sighin' so deep
Don't worry we're gonna find a way

I'm waitin', waitin' on a sunny day
Gonna chase the clouds away
Waitin' on a sunny day

Without you, I'm workin' with the rain fallin' down
I'm half a party in a one dog town
I need you to chase these blues away
Without you, I'm a drummer girl that can't keep a beat
An ice cream truck on a deserted street
I hope that you're coming to stay

I'm waitin', waitin' on a sunny day
Gonna chase the clouds away
Waitin' on a sunny day

Hard times, baby well they come to us all
Sure as the tickin' of the clock on the wall
Sure as the turnin' of the night into day
Your smile girl, brings the mornin' light to my eyes
Lifts away the bleus when I rise
I hope that you're coming to stay

I'm waitin', waitin' on a sunny day
Gonna chase the clouds away
Waitin' on a sunny day

WALK LIKE A MAN
I remember how rough your hand felt on mine
On my wedding day
And the tears cried on my shoulder
I couldn't turn away
Well so much has happened to me
That I don't understand
All I can think of is being five years old following behind you at the beach
Tracing your footprints in the sand
Trying to walk like a man

By Our Lady Of The Roses
We lived in the shadow of the elms
I remember ma draggin' me and my sister up the street to the church
Whenever she heard those wedding bells
Well would they ever look so happy again
The handsome groom and his bride
As they stepped into that long black limousine
For their mystery ride
Well tonight you step away from me
And alone at the alter I stand
And as I watch my bride coming down the aisle I pray
For the strength to walk like a man

Well now the years have gone and I've grown
From that seed you've sown
But I didn't think there'd be so many steps
I'd have to learn on my own
Well I was young and I didn't know what to do
When I saw your best steps stolen away from you
Now I'll do what I can
I'll walk like a man
And I'll keep on walkin'

WALKING IN THE STREET
Oh Billy stares at Cherry in the hall
And walks out into the rain so blessed and tall
Standin' on the corner with a gun underneath his coat
Beneath the stars on the street
Oh on Lexington Avenue they stand
Velvet aces they case the promised land
Reachin' out across the hoods with both hands
Oh, tryin' to catch a ride

Tonight we're lovers in the cold
Running past the graveyards in the snow
Walking in the street with nowhere to go
And it's no, no, no

Oh and the getaway driver waits outside the store
He pulls away just as Billy runs out the door
Oh and Billy won't run anymore, no, no, no

Oh baby I can't lay the stars at your feet
Oh but I think we could take it all, just you and me
Oh come on, you'll see, there's a lot of room
For you baby, in this front seat

Tonight we're lovers on that road (in the snow)
Running past the graveyards in the snow
Walking in the street with nowhere to go
And it's oh, oh, oh

WALKING ON THE AVENUE

Walking down the avenue
Of a dark ???
Listen now, I am blue
Deep in there I hope it's true
Love will just have to be
You're the only one for me
Love will call in time ???
Creepin' down the the avenue

Baby if you know it's right
Maybe that I'm alright
Come on now won't you
Baby don't cut me loose
Walking down the avenue
Walking down the avenue

And my girl now if I could
Baby I would do what I could do
I'd call you back and make it right
Call it down and ???
Baby if there was another man
If there was a sweeter man
Baby you know that I would do
Anything that I could do
And I want another one
Baby going on and on
If you want to go along
Baby don't come alone
Come alone
Walking down the avenue
Walking on the avenue

Baby when I'm all ???
Girls come to my hotel room
Well they just want to sit and talk
Baby it's a ???
Boys they all love my walk
Baby when I'm walking down
Come out tonight
Baby go do what you can do
Cause I now it's mean and true
Baby I'm in love with you
When I'm walking on the avenue
When I'm walking on the avenue
When I'm walking on the avenue

WALKING THROUGH MIDNIGHT
Well I've been walking through midnight
And there's no trace of dawn
I'm stuck in this moonlight
It's leading me on
My body's on fire
And I can't stand the pain
This burning desire
I feel once again

Now I'm fighting with madness
As I move down the street
Surrounded by sadness
I can't take this heat
The streetlamps are glowing
Like coals in the mist
Their lights keep me moving
I just can't resist

Now there's peace in this valley
But none in my mind
Like a drunk in an alley
I'm stumbling blind
With no destination
At an unholy speed
I must keep on moving
Try to walk off this need

WAR
(Barret Strong, Norman Whitfield/Edwin Star)

War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
War is something that I despise
For it means destruction of innocent lives
For it means tears in thousands of mothers' eyes
When their sons go out to fight to give their lives

War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again
War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing

War
It's nothing but a heartbreaker
War
Friend only to the undertaker
War is the enemy of all mankind
The thought of war blows my mind
Handed down from generation to generation
Induction destruction
Who wants to die

War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again
War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing

War has shattered many young men's dreams
Made them disabled bitter and meanLife is too precious to be fighting wars
each day
War can't give life it can only take it away

War
It's nothing but a heartbreaker
War
Friend only to the undertaker
Peace love and understanding
There must be some place for these things today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord there's gotta be a better way
That's better than
War

War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again
War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing

WAR NURSE
She was just another war nurse
She could strike a noble pose
Caring for our young boys
When a bullet laid him low
She would have over them cry
And pulled the covers over them when they died
She was just another lonesome lady, lover, sister of the gun
And though friends would call her darling
She was the nurse 'neath the rising sun
She knew no hells or heavens, or harbors or havens
She was every mother, sister, wife and lover
Whose love a soldier boy was savin'
She believed in the birth of the broad sword
She was not a shielded one
Though friends would call her darlin'
She was nurse 'neath the rising sun
She was a soldier's shrapnel sweetheart
Direct from the combat zone
She was the reincarnation of the Virgin Mary
She was the hooker down in San Antone
And though her heart was somewhere in Iceland
Command in the dawn patrol
Blessed in this blood and stitched into these bones
the war nurse left her soul
Blessed in this blood and stitched into these bones
the war nurse left her soul

WE SHALL OVERCOME

One, two, three, four

Hey we shall overcome, we shall overcome
We shall overcome someday
Darlin' here in my heart, yeah I do believe
We shall overcome someday

Well we'll walk hand in hand, we'll walk hand in hand
We'll walk hand in hand someday
Darlin' here in my heart, yeah I do believe
We'll walk hand in hand someday

Well we shall live in peace, we shall live in peace
We shall live in peace someday
Darlin' here in my heart, yeah I do believe
We shall live in peace someday

Well we are not afraid, we are not afraid
We shall overcome someday
Yeah here in my heart, I do believe
We shall overcome someday

Hey we shall overcome, we shall overcome
We shall overcome someday
Darlin' here in my heart, I do believe
We shall overcome someday
We shall overcome someday

WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT
Now you say you have a friend, you trust him with your life
You trust him with your money, you trust him with your kids
You'd even trust him with your wife
You better watch what's goin' on when the lights are out
When the night is dark, when there ain't nobody lookin' around
Yeah when the lights are out, down in this dirty little town

Well now the world is dark and funny, better listen up to what I say
You ain't gonna know what's going on by what you see in the light of day
You gotta watch what's goin' on when the lights are out
When the night is dark, when there ain't nobody lookin' around
Yeah when the lights are out in this dirty little town

Now you swear that she trusted you
Within reason I understand
But you kept slippin' in late at night
And in the mornin' you had that smell on your hands

Well now the world is turning, Rome is burning
Me, I'm watching and I'm learning
They say sure as God's hand and the tickin' of the clock
The lord's light'll shine under every slimy rock
Well last night I slept the sleep of fear
And I heard God's voice whisper in my ear
He said you better watch what's going on when the lights are out
When the night is dark, when there ain't nobody lookin' around
Yeah when the lights are out, down in this dirty little town

WHEN YOU DANCE
When you dance
I hear the music rocking everywhere
When you dance
I see the lights shining through your hair
When you dance
The band is blowing like a hurricane
When you dance
You look so fine but you don't know my name

Come near baby, don't be afraid
Just one taste won't do
I can't hold back one more day
Sugar I know I got to dance with you

When you dance
Your smile ain't hiding what you're thinking of
When you dance
Your body trembles like you're making love
When you move, baby
My soul is aching and my blood runs hot
Run into me now
My heart is breaking, shaking what you got

Come near baby, don't be afraid
Just one taste won't do
I can't hold back one more day
Sugar I know I got to dance with you

Shake 'em down now

Come near baby, don't be afraid
Just one taste won't do
I can't hold back one more day
Sugar I know I got to dance with you

Oh yeah baby
When you dance
I hear the music rocking everywhere
When you dance, baby
This time you tumble, honey, I don't care
When you dance

WHEN YOU NEED ME
When you need me call my name
'Cause without you my life just wouldn't be the same
If you want me come sunny skies or rain
When you need me just call my name

If you miss me, I'll be there
To brush the sunlight from your hair
I'll be there to guide you when trouble walks beside you
If you need me I'll be there
And when this dirty world has been cold to you
I got two strong arms waitin' to hold you
And when those mean days come along
We'll stand together and we'll take 'em on
So if you need me just call my name

When you need me call my name
'Cause without you my life just isn't the same
'Cause when this world kicked me around
You picked me up off the ground
So if you need me I'll be there

CHORUS

WHEN YOU'RE ALONE
Times were tough love was not enough
So you said sorry Johnny I'm gone gone gone
You said my act was funny
But we both knew what was missing honey
So you let out on your own
Now that pretty form that you've got baby
Will make sure you get along
But you're gonna find out someday honey

(Chorus)
When you're alone you're alone
When you're alone you're alone
When you're alone you're alone
When you're alone you ain't nothing but alone

Now I was young and pretty on the mean streets of the city
And I fought to make 'em my home
With just the shirt on my back I left and swore I'd never look back
And man I was gone gone gone
But there's things that'll knock you down you don't even see coming
And send you crawling like a baby back home
You're gonna find out that day sugar

(Chorus)

I knew some day your runnin' would be through
And you'd think back on me and you
And your love would be strong
You'd forget all the bad and think only of all the laughs that we had
And you'd wanna come home
Now it ain't hard feelings or nothin' sugar
That ain't what's got me singing this song
It's just nobody knows baby where love goes
But when it goes it's gone gone

(Chorus)

WHERE THE BANDS ARE
I hear the guitars ringin' out
Ringin' out down Union Street
I hear the lead singer shoutin' out, girl
I wanna be a slave to the beat
Yeah, tonight I wanna break my chains
Somebody break my heart
Somebody shake my brains
Downtown there's something that I wanna hear
There's a sound, little girl, keeps ringing in my ear

CHORUS
I wanna be where the bands are
I wanna be where the bands are
Where the bands are
I wanna be where the bands are

I get off from work and I grab something to eat
I turn the corner and I drive down your street
Little gray houses darling looks like nowhere
But hey I know you're hiding in there
Come on out for just a little while
You know that heart of stone, girl, it just ain't your style
Tonight I wanna feel the beat of the crowd
And when I tell you that I love you
I wanna have to shout it out loud
Shout it out loud

CHORUS

I hear the guitars ringin' out again
Ringin' on down Union Street
I hear the lead singer shoutin' out girl
I wanna be a slave to the beat
And I want something that'll break my chains
Something to break my heart
Something to shake my brains
There's a rocker's special on tonight
So meet me on down
'Neath the neon lights

CHORUS

WHITE LIES (Don't Do It To Me)
Your scarpbook's filled with pictures
Of all your leading men
Oh baby don't put my picture
In there with them

Oh don't make us some little girl's dream
That can not ever really ever come true
Baby don't do it to me
I won't do it to you

You see all the romantic movies
You dream and take the boy's home
But when the action fades girl
You're left there all alone

You deserve better than this
little girl can't you see it's true
At least I'll try to prove it to you

Baby you prove it to me
And I'll prove it to you

Now every night you go out looking
For true love's satisfaction
But in the morning you always end up
Settling for just lights, camera, action

In another cameo role
With some bit play you're befriending
You're gonna go broken hearted
Looking for that happy ending

Well girl you're gonna you're gonna end up
Just another lonely ticket sold
Crying alone in the theater
At the end of the show

Don't make us some little girl's dream
That can not ever really ever come true
Baby don't do it to me
I won't do it to you
Yeah, I won't do it to you

WHITE TOWN
It's midnight down in sector two
Little girl walkin' dressed in innocence and cool
Only fourteen and dressed up for the score
Hold that breath now boy, he(?)
She dances, baby, to the beat
Of breaking glass and running feet

Down in White Town
Down in White Town
Down in White Town

Oh, she comes home from work and grabs something to eat
Turn the corner and walks down her street
In a row of houses, chic, shiny and dirty and grey
Disappears like the scenery in another man's play
And as she dances, oh, to the beat
Oh the trooper stickin' dresses for the number on the sheet

Down in White Town
Down in White Town
Down in White Town
Down in White Town

Yeah, Mr. Outside, you're walkin' so free
If you turn your eyes so you don't see
You act like you're the hand turns the key
And you become the hand that turns the key
And no matter how I try I cannot understand
The way that they will turn a man
Into a stranger in his own land

WHO'LL STOP THE RAIN
(John Fogerty/Creedence Clearwater Revival)

Long as I remember
The rain been falling down
Clouds of myst'ry pourin'
Confusion on the ground

Good men through the ages
They try to find the sun
But I wonder, still I wonder
Who'll stop the rain

I went down Virginia
Seekin' shelter from the storm
Just caught up in the fable
I watched the tower grow
Five-year plan and new deals
Wrapped in golden chains
Still I wonder, yes I wonder
Who'll stop the rain

Heard the singers playin'
How we cheered for more
The crowd had rushed together
Tryin' to keep warm
Still the rain keeps falling
Fallin' through the years

And I wonder, still I wonder
Who'll stop the rain
I wanna know, baby I wanna know

WILD BILLY'S CIRCUS STORY

The machinist climbs his ferris wheel like a brave
And the fire eater's lyin' in a pool of sweat, victim of the heatwave
Behind the tent the hired hand tightens his legs on the sword swallower's blade
And circus town's on the shortwave
The runway lies ahead like a great false dawn
Fat lady, big mama, Missy Bimbo sits in her chair and yawns
And the man-beast lies in his cage sniffin' popcorn
As the midget licks his fingers and suffers Missy Bimbo's scorn
Circus town's been born
Whoa, and a press roll drummer go, ballerina to and fro
Cartwheelin' up on that tightrope with a cannon blast lightin' flash
Movin' fast through the tent Mars bent, he's gonna miss his fall
Oh God save the human cannonball.
And the flying Zambinis watch Margarita do her neck twist,
And the ringmaster gets the crowd to count along: "Ninety-five, ninety-six, ninety-seven"
A ragged suitcase in his hand, he steals silently away from the circus grounds
And the highway's haunted by the carnival sounds
They dance like a great greasepaint ghost on the wind
A man in baggy pants, a lonely face, a crazy grin
Runnin' home to some small Ohio town
Jesus send some good women to save all your clowns
And circus boy dances like a monkey on barbed wire
And the barker romances with a junkie, she's got a flat tire,
And now the elephants dance real funky and the band plays like a jungle fire
Circus town's on the live wire
And the strong man Sampson lifts the midget little Tiny Tim way up on his shoulders, way up
And carries him on down the midway past the kids, past the sailors
To his dimly lit trailer
And the ferris wheel turns and turns like it ain't ever gonna stop
And the circus boss leans over, whispers into the little boy's ear "Hey son, you want to try the big top?"
All aboard, Nebraska's our next stop.

WINGS FOR WHEELS (THUNDER ROAD)
The screen door slams, Christine's (Angelina's) dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
(Hey) that's me (babe) and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone (in that mirror) again tonight
Don't run back inside, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe you (we) ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith (well woman) there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but hey (baby, ah) you're alright
And that's alright with me
This old Ford she's gonna overheat
Make up your mind girl I gotta get her back out on the street
I know you're lonely like me so baby don't try and fake it
I'm no prince and I can't lay the stars at your feet
But I got this old car and she's pretty tough to beat
There's plenty of room in my front seat, baby if you wanna take it
Oh roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
It's like the rushing touch, the dirty wings them highway Angels wear
Well tonight we're gonna find out how it feels
I'm gonna trade in your wings - for wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting down on the tracks
Ah, mama, come take my hand (Well now try hard Chrissie to understand)
We're gonna ride all the way to the promised land
Oh I'm gonna dance all the way, dance all the way
(Babe if you're born with nothing in your hands
Hey it's your only chance)
Well I don't know but baby I've been told
There's something waiting for us, down that dirty road
Oh take a chance, take a chance, take a chance
(Oh I wish you would come
So leave what you've lost, leave what's grown old on Thunder Road)
Well now I bought this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
I got my car parked out back if you're ready to take that long walk
>From your front porch to my front seat
Well I think we could take it all babe, just you and me
Climb in back baby, the ride's for free
Oh come take my hand, we're gonna ride all the way to the promised land
We'll dance all the way
Oh baby I don't know but I've been told
There's something waiting for us, down that dirty road
If we take our chance, take our chance
Now the season's over and I feel it getting cold
I wish I could take you to some sandy beach where we'd never grow old
Ah but baby you know that's just jive
But tonight's bustin' open and I'm alive
Oh do (baby) what you can to make me feel like a man
But this 4/4/2's gonna overheat
Make up your mind girl, I gotta get her back out on the street
I know you're lonely like me, oh so don't fake it
And maybe I can't lay the stars at your feet
But I got this old car and she's pretty tough to beat
There's plenty of room in my front seat
Oh if you think you can make it, climb in (So Christine climb in)
This is town full of losers and baby I was born to win

WINTER SONG
From their northeast source the sour wind roars
Bear gifts fresh from the valley waters.
Hallow echoes strip Pennsylvania mountain walls
With their corsets and their old Betsy ruffle
And their slips with pearly white.
They stand bulging up against the screen door,
A banshee "Good night."

Summer's sweet and she brings me water,
But give me Winter, that old icy whore.
While Summer lies meek and follows orders,
Winter cries "Me!" and pulls you through the door.

The limp milk tramp cries metal-flake tears.
They drip like honey down momma's leg.
You lay watchin' them off. Eat a hole in his cloth.
He'll ask, but he don't beg.
Said I'd like to the mademoiselle
Who holds the keys to all these doors around the waist
And rings the bell.

Summer's sweet and she brings me water,
But give me Winter, that old icy whore.
Summer lies meek and follows orders,
Winter cries "Me!" and pulls you through the door.

With scufflin' sound, the knot-voiced matron makes her rounds,
Knockin' on each and every door.
With a look like white heat, she sways, salty, sweet
And leads me 'cross her Persian floor.
She squeeze' my hand and before her I stood.
I was scared. It was dark, but it was good.

Summer's sweet and she brings me water,
But give me Winter, that old icy whore.
While Summer lies meek and follows orders,
Winter cries "Me!" and pulls me through her door.

WITH EVERY WISH
Ol' catfish in the lake, we called him Big Jim
When I was a kid, my only wish was to get my line in him
Skipped church one Sunday rowed out and throw'd in my line
Jim took that hook pole and me right over the side
Went driftin' down past old tires and rusty cans of beer
The angel of the lake whispered in my ear
"Before you chose your wish son
You better think first
With every wish there comes a curse"

I fell in love with beautiful Doreen
She was the prettiest thing this old town'd ever seen
I courted her and I made her mine
But I grew jealous whenever another man'd
Come walkin' down the line
And my jealousy made me treat her mean and cruel
She sighed, "Bobby oh Bobby you're such a fool
Don't you know before you choose your wish
You'd better think first
'Cause with every wish there comes a curse"

These days I sit around and laugh
At the many rivers I've crossed
But on the far banks there's always another forest
Where a man can get lost
Well there in the high trees love's bluebird glides
Guiding us 'cross to another river on the other side
And there someone is waitin' with a look in her eyes
And though my heart's grown weary
And more than a little bit shy
Tonight I'll drink from her waters to quench my thirst
And leave the angels to worry
With every wish...

Without You
Monday, I go to work
Tuesday, can't find my shirt
Wednesday, I'm feeling blue
I'm helpless, darling
Without you, without you
Without you, without you
Thursdays, everything's fine
Friday, I'm out of my mind
Saturday, Sunday too

It's hopeless, darling
Without you, without you
Without you, without you

Each and every night of the week
I toss and turn in my sleep
Worrying if you're all right
Wondering where you are tonight

Monday, I go to work
Tuesday, can't find my shirt
Wednesday, I'm feelin' blue

I'm helpless, darlin'
Without you, without you
Without you, without you
Thursdays, everything's fine

Each and every night of the week
I toss and turn in my sleep
Worrying if you're all right
Wondering where you are tonight

Monday, I go to work
Tuesday, can't find my shirt
Wednesday, I'm feelin' blue

I'm helpless, darlin'
Without you, without you
Without you, without you
Thursdays, everything's fine
Friday, I'm out of my mind
Saturday, Sunday too

It's hopeless, darlin'
Without you, without you
Without you, without you

WORLDS APART

I hold you in my arms, that's when it starts
I seek faith in you kiss, and comfort in your heart
I taste the seed upon your lips, lay my tongue upon your scars
But when I look into your eyes, we stand worlds apart

Where the distant oceans sing, and rise to the plain
In this dry and troubled country your beauty remains
Down from the mountain roads where the highway rolls to dark
'Neath Allah's blessed rain, we remain worlds apart

Sometimes the truth just ain't enough
Or it's too much in times like this
Let's throw the truth away, we'll find it in this kiss
In your skin upon my skin, in the beating of our hearts
May the living let us in, before the dead tear us apart

We'll let blood build a bridge, over mountains draped in stars
I'll meet you on the ridge, between these worlds apart
We've got this moment now to live, then it's all dust dust and dark
Let love give what it gives
Let's let love give what it gives

WORKING ON THE HIGHWAY
Friday night's pay night guys fresh out of work
Talking about the weekend scrubbing off the dirt
Some heading home to their families some looking to get hurt
Some going down to Stovell wearing trouble on their shirts

I work for the county out on 95
All day I hold a red flag and watch the traffic pass me by
In my head I keep a picture of a pretty little miss
Someday mister I'm gonna lead a better life than this

Working on the highway laying down the blacktop
Working on the highway all day long I don't stop
Working on the highway blasting through the bedrock
Working on the highway, working on the highway

I met her at a dance down at the union hall
She was standing with her brothers back up against the wall
Sometimes we'd go walking down the union tracks
One day I looked straight at her and she looked straight back

Working on the highway...

I saved up my money and I put it all away
I went to see her daddy but we didn't have much to say
"Son can't you see that she's just a little girl
She don't know nothing about this cruel cruel world"

We lit out down to Florida we got along all right
One day her brothers came and got her and they took me in a black and white
The prosecutor kept the promise that he made on that day
And the judge got mad and he put me straight away
I wake up every morning to the work bell clang
Me and the warden go swinging on the Charlotte County road gang

Working on the highway...

WRECK ON THE HIGHWAY
Last night I was out driving
Coming home at the end of the working day
I was riding alone through the drizzling rain
On a deserted stretch of a county two-lane
When I came upon a wreck on the highway

There was blood and glass all over
And there was nobody there but me
As the rain tumbled down hard and cold
I seen a young man lying by the side of the road
He cried Mister, won't you help me please

An ambulance finally came and took him to Riverside
I watched as they drove him away
And I thought of a girlfriend or a young wife
And a state trooper knocking in the middle of the night
To say your baby died in a wreck on the highway

Sometimes I sit up in the darkness
And I watch my baby as she sleeps
Then I climb in bed and I hold her tight
I just lay there awake in the middle of the night
Thinking 'bout the wreck on the highway
